Question: I have a question for an eye surgeon. there is a type of IOL available in Europe and not available here called the Calhoun LAL.

have there been any negative reports about the Calhoun vs other IOL.

I heard there were some issues.

I am considering going to Canada to have cataract surgery and have it done.

Brief Answer:
Light adjustable lenses are very good and latest advent of technology,

Detailed Answer:
Hi ,

Calhoun is a light adjustable intra-ocular lens. Main advantage is that optical power of this lens can be adjusted with a beam of light after standard cataract removal and subsequent IOL implantation. After normal cataract removal and subsequent IOL implantations, some residual refractive errors persist but light adjustable lens don't have any such problem.

The only requirement before implanting this lens is the patient’s pupil will need to dilate widely enough, 6 to 6.5 millimeters, to be able to irradiate the entire optic.

Though this lens is a latest advancement in technology and is very successful in short term trials, yet long term trials are yet to be conducted. No surgery is fully perfect. There can be problem in any surgery, but i would suggest you to go for LAL if cost is not the issue, complications do occur but they are very rare.

Good luck, its a very good lens. Don't worry , it's much better than normal IOL lenses.
Thanks!

Hi again dear,

I've already told you that most of the research published are short term trials.
Long term trial results are still awaited.

Theoretically they are excellent, Practically on short term trials they are excellent but long term results, as i said, are still awaited.
