Is Intracameral Antibiotic Injection Advisable After Cataract Surgery

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Sep 2015
Question: my wife is scheduled for cataract surgery in 4 weeks, during our visit with the doctor, he said that in stead of putting 3 drops of med in her eye daily for one month, he would implant medicine in her eye that will release the needed portion daily, and she would only need one drop daily for 30 days instead of 3 drops.
We would like your opinion of this procedure. He also said that this is a new procedure , How new? Is it safe?
Thanks
XXXX

Your opinion of using intracameral antibiotic injection at the end of cataract surgery as opposed to post op eye drops. What are the pros and cons?

Brief Answer:
Intracameral route is far superior

Detailed Answer:
Hi Madam,

I understand your concern.

Intracameral antibiotic injection has been in use since 2008 in various states particularly San Fransisco.

It's a novel way of administering antibiotics, particularly in cataractous patients.

This route has received accolades from almost all leading Global Ophthalmological societies.

Not only antibiotics but many other drugs have been known to be given by this route.

This form of administration has been known to suppress postoperative eye infections in cataract patients quite effectively.

There are no known side effects with this route of administration.

Also, the drug wastage is minimal and drug availability will be very high.

Patient compliance is also very high with this route of administration.

In my opinion, the Intracameral route is far superior to postoperative instillation of eye drops.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you
