Is High Fever After A Head Injury A Matter Of Concern?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: My daughter fell and hit the side of her eye temple area on Friday. Today is Sunday the swelling went down but now she has a fever of 102.2. She is 6 years old and today was the first time I ever had to use a thermometer. Do I need to bring her to the emergency room?
Thanks so much

Brief Answer:
Fever is unrelated to head injury

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms XXXXXXX

Being a Pediatric Surgeon I encounter many cases of Head injury to present with fever.
Fever could be just co-incidental thing.

If you notice any of the signs , consult Pediatrician/Pediatric Surgeon or ER at earliest

1. Excessive crying or excessive sleeping
2. Abnormal movements of the body which could be convulsion
3. Persistent Vomiting: 1 or 2 episode of vomiting is quite common in Pediatric Head injury and is not cause for concern.
4. Loss of consciousness

Fever can be controlled with Paracetamol with dosage of 10mg/kilogramme body weight per dose .

In case you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Wishing you happy and healthy life

Take Care
