Is Hard Bump On Top Of Head Post Injury A Serious Cause For Concern?

Posted on Tue, 7 Apr 2015
Question: Hi my 9 month old baby pulled the chord of the baby monitor in the kitchen and it landed right ontop of her head where the soft spot is. The monitor fell from my hip height onto her. She has a big hard bump. She is acting normally and even giggling and laughing. Should I be worried?

Brief Answer:
Look out for the ominous signs of head injury

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I understand that she has badly hit her head. There could be localised bleeding or soft tissue swelling. But if there are serious damages, there would be manifestations as well. The things to look for would be:
* Vomiting
* Unconsciousness or altered consciousness
* Severe crying due to severe headache
* Loss of balance
* Seizures

I would be less concerned if the child is active and playful. But, if the above symptoms are present, you would need to visit the emergency of a hospital with pediatric facilities. But otherwise, I do not think you need to get concerned.

Hope that helps.

How long should it take for her hard bump to disappear. She is happily asleep but I just went in to feel her bump and it is very obvious. Does the size of the bump matter?

Brief Answer:
It may take a week or so for the bump to disappear.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

The size of the bump does not really bump. But if the size gradually increases, there could be reasons to be concerned, not otherwise. The bump should take a week or so to go away. If the child is active and seemingly normal, you need not worry.
