Is Excessive Sleeping In A New Born Infant Normal?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Jul 2015
Question: i have a infant 11 days old and she has been sleeping from past 6 hours, even when we are trying to wake her up for feeding she is just waking up and then again going for sleep without even feeding. She also had her first bath today.

Is this normal for 11 month old baby? or we need to rush her to hospital or we need to check/wait for more symptoms before starting to panic?

Please advice?

Brief Answer:
I would suggest you to get the child evaluated by a pediatrician

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

It is absolutely normal for a baby to sleep 20 hours a day. But in your case, there is a reasonable probability that the child is lethargic. It needs clinical examination to be sure. Please do not panic. But I would suggest you to get take her to the hospital and to get her evaluated by a pediatrician. I would not suggest waiting for further signs. Even if the doctor evaluates the baby and tells you that the baby is fine, that is important too.

The other sign to look out for, would be reduction in the urinary output. If the amount of feeding is inadequate, it will manifest with reduction in total urinary output.

Regards
