Question: This is a neurological question? My son is going through testing for mythenia gravis so far seronegitive. Drooping eyelid was first symptom. was given mestion did not help drooping did have mild weakness but was manageable. Next neurologist said that she was not sure he has it? Told him to stop taking mestinon. He's since become weaker in the legs? Should he start taking the mestion again and how long to see a result?jules

Brief Answer:
He can start taking mestinon.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your son's symptoms of dropping of eyelids and weakness of legs.

These symptoms are highly suggestive of a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis (MG).

Acetylcholine receptor antibody may be negative in about one fourth of the patients with MG.

Other tests that can help in making a diagnosis of MG are:

1. Repetitive nerve stimulation (EMG)

2. Edrophonium (tensilon) test.

As of now, please restart mestinon (pyridostigmine) and watch for any improvement.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Brief Answer:
Usually with a week.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

If his weakness is due to myasthenia gravis, we expect improvement in a few days, usually within one week of starting mestinon.
