default
Posted on Fri, 18 Sep 2015
Question: Hi,
My parents are both diabetics. My dad has type 2 diagnosed when he was in his late 30s and has never been overweight. My mum has type 1 diagnosed when she was in her late 50s.
What is my risk of developing diabetes, either type 1 or 2, later in life?

Brief Answer:
Less chance of Type 1 but more chance of Type 2 diabetes

Detailed Answer:
Good day.
Noted your concern.
If one parent has Type 1 diabetes you have only around 5% chance of having type 1 diabetes. However, with one parent having Type 2 diabetes, you have around 40% chance of developing Type 2 diabetes.
To assess risk of developing diabetes , you may undergo a 75 gram glucose tolerance test.
