Is Dark Colored Urine A Symptom Of Kidney Cancer?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 May 2014
Question: Hi there,
I was a little anxious last night as I noticed that I had darker urine than usual. I saw no blood, but it seemed to have a light brown tinge to it. The night before I had eaten dark chocolate, guacamole, spinach lasagna and two or three glasses of red wine with dinner. I also had a smoothie with mangoes in it. I had eaten a punnet of blackberries on Friday, but the darker urine happened on Monday, so not sure if that was too long ago to be related?
The day it happened I do think that I was a little dehydrated, as I had been in town walking and forgot to bring water.
After the darker urine, I drank three glasses of water, and from then on my urine has been completely normal
I'm a 30 year old female in otherwise good health. I think I'm a little anxious about my kidneys as my grandfather died of kidney cancer. Do you think I should follow this up with my doctor, or am I okay unless the symptom returns?

Brief Answer:
Dark colour urine is due to Dehydration.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have
passed high coloured urine due to dehydration.

In view of absence of any other urinary symptoms and pain your problem seems to be due to concentrated urine due to dehydration and due to food and chocolates that you have ingested on that particular day.

Gross hematuria and flank pain are the two major symptoms of cancer of the kidney .
.
This being a isolated and single incidence you need not worry at all.

You may get your routine urine test done .The absence of plenty of RBC in urine will help you to allay your anxiety.

Ensure to drink more water. To keep your urine dilute.

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,
I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Hi Doctor,

Thanks for your response!

In XXXXXXX we don't typically do a routine urine analysis. I will next visit the doctor in about 1 month to renew my pill prescription though, so if you think it is necessary to test I could ask then.

Will it be okay to wait until then to talk to my doctor about this? If she doesn't suggest a urine test, (and I have had no other symptoms) should I still ask her for one?

Thanks
