Is Cloudy Urine A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Sep 2016
Question: Hi, Over the past few months I have noticed that my urine changes colour from clear to milky/white. This can occur at the beginning, midstream or at the end. There is no strict pattern. I dont have any other symptoms such as pain, or discharge between urination etc. There are days when I wont have this, but then other days where it occurs. I have been to my doctor and did a MSU which came back negative and I have also tested negative for STDs. I also sometimes get some white stuff with my urine and have noticed some slight redness about 1cm inside the urethra. I am not sure if the redness is normal or not, or if it s just me being anxious? These are shown in the pictures. Do you have any idea what this might be?

Brief Answer:
Possibility of nongonococcal urethritis/prostatitis have to be ruled out.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.
I saw the pictures sent by you.
You had not mentioned anything about your sexual activities.
Congestion of uretral mucosa can not be ruled out from the picture you had sent. Possibility of Urethritis has to be ruled out. The urethral discharge mucoid or slightly muco-purulent in nature. It is not fit with Gonorrhea. It is better to rule out Chlamydia or ureaplasma urealyticum urethritis in your case. I would like to know about the results of urine deposits examination. Presence of pus cells more than 5 gives a clue that there is urethritis. Presence some casts or crystals can reveal the cause of the white deposits. Urine deposits can be done with a split specimen of urine, (1st part and second part) so that it will be easy to identify the minimal inflammation and which part got affected.
Prostatitis has to be ruled out by a prostatic massage. Biochemical analysis of the white deposits over the glans penis also will give a clue for the whitish nature of urine

I have not been sexually active for 1.5 years roughly now. This initially started in september but then went away and didn't occur until months later. But now that it is occurring more frequently, it has got me anxious/worried.

I have had multiple STD tests over the last few months, mainly because I was anxious, but they have all come back negative. Recently, a swab showed I had non-specific urethritis at the GUM clinic. I was given azithromycin to treat for chlamydia as a precaution. But my urine tests did now show chlamydia or gonorrhoea.

Brief Answer:
Chronic prostatitis can cause such symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Prostatitis is a likely possibility. Inadequate treatment also would lead to prostatitis.
T. Azithromycin single dose might not be sufficient to cure prostatitis. Repeated prostatic massage along with a course of antibiotics will cure the condition. Past STD might be the cause for prostatitis. If Chlamydia negative, ureplasma can be thought of. Consult your urologist or a STD specialist for further help.

I have never had any STDs in the past, but will enquire about ureaplasma urealyticum. What is the recommended treatment for prostatitis, if that is the cause of my symptoms.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics to be decided after the exact etiology is known as per sensitiv

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Prostatitis needs certain special antibiotics to have adequate concentration in the prostate. Your urologist would be a better person to decide the same. Sometimes a culture and sensitivity test is a better option to decide the choice of antibiotics apart from finding the exact etiology.
