Question: Hi, I have a 10 week old kid and did not breastfeed her for last two days as I had fever and took taxim injection twice. My question is do I need to express the milk completely before breast feeding her. If not what is the risk to baby

Brief Answer:
Breast feeding after taxim is acceptable after taking caution

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Taxim contains cefotaxime which is an antibiotic.

2. Research shows that if a mother takes up to 4 grams of cefotaxime every day then the concentration in breast milk is unlikely to cause any adverse effect.

3. However the above side effects on the baby are not completely evaluated and some babies might have a diarrhea due to the mother taking cefotaxime especially when taken for longer duration. If your baby develops any diarrhea or thrush then please stop breast feeding and provide alternate source of nutrition.

Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
