Is An Additional Shot Of Tetanus Toxoid Necessary After Receiving Scheduled Vaccination?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Sep 2015
Question: My daughter is 2 year and 9 month old. She was given dTap vaccination on 14th march 2015

Today we had little nail coming out from the carpet and she got hurt in her feet due to that nail. Cut was not deep it was just on the skinsurface but little blood did came out. After wiping it by anticeptic towel, it dried off. We have put triple antibiotic cream with band-aid for now

Do we need to get her tetnus shot to avoid any infection? I dont see cut as deep but stil. Want to confirm. Is her previous vaccination enough for this?

Please advice since we arw in usa so it takes time to get appointment. In case we need to get her tetnus shot then it should be given within what time frame of injury?
Please note dTap vaccination was given on 14th march 2014 not 2015 as mentioned earlier.

Please let me know if you need additional before sound advice can be given

Brief Answer:
She does not need additional doses of tetanus toxoid

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Let me assure you that after receiving the scheduled vaccination, her immunity is already in place and she does not need further shots of tetanus toxoid. Ideally in case of minor cuts, the vaccine is to be taken within 24 hours and if the would is severe, tetanus immunoglobulin is to be given without any further delay. But in her case, since a further shot is not required, the time frame does not apply.

Hope that answers your query.

Do not panic. Just apply some antiseptic/antibacterial and it would be fine.

Thanks Dr Diptanshu, I have uploaded picture of her wound for your review. this was taken today morning.

We have applied triple antibiotic medicine and band-aid there.

Please review the wound picture and advice if we need to see her pediatric or get her tetanus injection.

Thanks for your timely response

Brief Answer:
If there are no localized signs of infection, medical attention is not reqd

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for attaching the images. I assure you that she does not need an extra shot of tetanus injection. Continue keeping the area clean and use a band-aid. Unless pus starts appearing, you need not worry or take her to a pediatrician.
