Brief Answer:
Rogaine (minoxidil) need to be used for long term.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM

I have gone through your query. Rogaine (minoxidil) need to be used for long term like 4 months to start getting effects. It should be continued also. It shouldn't be stopped at once. You can wean off if you want to stop once you get desired effects. Minoxidil is a FDA approved treatment for androgenetic alopecia. As your mother had it most likely you are also having that.

Taking hair grow supplements containing biotin and essential vitamins also helps. Taking saw palmetto is also good. Capixyl gel for local application is a new option for adrogenetic alopecia. You can use capixyl along with minoxidil also.

Using ketoconazole shampoo weekly twice is also recommended.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
