Is Ofloxacin The Right Medicine For UTI?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Feb 2015
Question: Hi Doctor, I took my 7th tablet of 800 mg. Bactria forte (cotrimoxazole) at 8pm tonite (my dosage is 2 tabs per day) but my condition hasn't improved. The first two tablets relieved me somewhat, but after that, I felt not much relief, perhaps because I took this same medication in my last bout of UTI a year ago and I remember it didn't help me much either then, and I had to shift to something else that got me well. It's now almost midnight and I have no way of going to a drugstore but I found a few tablets of INOFLOX 400mg in my medicine cabinet. A friend told me Ofloxacin is more effective than cotrimoxazole. So I would like to shift to the Inoflox 400mg now bec am in pain, but can I take it now even if I took the Bactrim forte just 4 hours ago? Also is this to be taken once or twice a day and can I take it on an empty stomach? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
ofloxacin usually good

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I guess if you do not have access to a medical facility, you can try ofloxacin if it is an emergency.
The cnventional dose is 200mg twice daily or the 400mg once daily preparation if available.
Under ideal circumstances, we would have wanted a blood picture, urine analysis and a urine culture and sensitivity.
You should not have any trouble because you had recently taken Bactria.
I suggest you take it at least 30-45minutes after you eat a simple meal to avoid gastric trouble. Take plenty of fluids. And if you have a citrate syrup, you can take that too, diluted with water and after meals thrice daily.
