Is Monistat Advisable For Yeast Infection During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Nov 2016
Question: yes, my daughter is pregnant with twins via invitro fertilization due to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. She is on Progesterone suppositories 2x daily for the first 12 weeks. She is 8 1/2 weeks pregnant. She has a lot of pain and burning and frequency and urge to urinate symptoms. She went in and was checked for a bladder infection, but it appears she doesn't have one. Can she take monistat for a yeast infection? unfortunately, she's unable to reach her physician or their assistant. She just wants to make sure the monistat won't offset the progesterone or cause other issues. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Use clotrimazole if there is real fungal infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns.

Her symptoms are typical of urinary tract infection. Sometimes the organism may not be detected. with these symptoms, it is better that she discusses with her doctor and starts antibiotic like Amoxycillin or Nitrofurantoin.

She need not use antifungal medicine for these symptoms. If she really has fungal infection then she needs to use antifungal medicines. Topical Clotrimazole ( canesten, Lotrimin) is FDA category B drug. She can use it instead of Micanazole. Micanazole is not classified by FDA.
There is evidence that it may interact with the progesterone and decrease its level. So if she is definitely having fungal infection, she can use clotrimazole vaginally pessary for 7 days. In that case she needs to increase the progesterone to thrice daily.
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.
Best wishes,
Dr Rama
