Is Mollaret's Meningitis Contagious?
Question: I'm a young, healthy hairstylist, and I have a client with Mollaret Meningitis. Is this type of meningitis contagious? If so, what precautions should I take?

Mollaret's meningitis is felt to be rare.....so if you've got a client with confirmed Mollaret's...get their autograph.....it may be worth something some day! LOL....
The disease is felt to be BENIGN as much for the patient as it is to their contacts. It has been thought in more recent years to be due to recurrent HSV type 2 infections. People with Mollaret's also show an increased association in suffering from Shingles infections.
However, while the meningitis occurs as a result of recurrent swelling of the brain layer coverings and we believe the HSV Type 2 infection could be responsible for many cases that doesn't mean that while the patient is suffering from the meningitis symptoms that they are necessarily contagious with HSV lesions over their body or something of that nature. The meningitic symptoms only affect the patient and after 3 days to 3 weeks the symptoms resolve.
Bottom line: NOT CONTAGIOUS. NO ADDITIONAL MEASURES TO PROTECT YOURSELF ARE NECESSARY OR RECOMMENDED BY THE CDC OR INFECTIOUS DISEASE EXPERTS.
