Is Minoxidil Advisable For A Lactating Mother?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Sep 2016
Question: Hi Doctor,
I am suffering from very heavy hair fall since 2-3 months which is resulting in bald patches in front of my head. I have a 5 months old baby and I am feeding her. I am not able to find the reason behind this.
Please suggest the solution for the same. Or if any medications are required to be taken?
I heard about minoxidil 5% solution for hair regrowth. Is it safe to apply that during breastfeeding.

Thanks and Regards XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Possibility of telugen effluvium...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I went through the details and understand your concern. Based on your description you seem to be suffering from hair loss problem only for the last 2 - 3 months post delivery. Therefore I consider the possibility of telugen effluvium as likely.

This is a temporary and reversible condition. And though minoxidil is quite safe, I would not recommend starting it now.

In this circumstance, I will suggest you not to be worried. Keep away from stressors. Drink plenty of fluids. Eat healthy - lots of proteins and fresh fruits / vegetables especially ones that grow under soil. You may also start on biotin supplement - tab biotin once a day for couple of months.

If symptoms do not improve say in the next 2-3 months, visit a dermatologist for evaluation of other causes. Minoxidil may be started thereafter.

Hope I have answered your question.

Regards
