Is Mefanorm Advisable For Fever In A Child?

Question: My son, 5 yrs old is having fever 104 from two days.. when i give him Paracetamol his fever is off till 2 hrs.
Doctor suggested MefaNorm 8th hrly. But six hrs after he is getting fever till 104 with shivering! Is it ok to give MEFANORM 100mg 5ml 6th hrly!

Hello

The total dose of 25 mg/kg/day of mefenemic acid(mefanorm) can be given in divided dosage 6-8 hourly.
At 5 years the usual weight of a child is between 15-20 kg.
So you can give it 6 hourly (5 ml) safely if needed. Do tepid water sponging as it helps in bringing down the temperature.
Give him plenty of fluids as this prevents dehydration associated with fever.
If fever continues for more than 3-4 days then consult your doctor for reevaluation.
