default
Posted on Tue, 17 Feb 2015
Question: Hi.. my daughter is only 2 weeks old.. my wife's milk output is almost zero and baby has been on lactogen feed since birth.. her birth weight and current weight is same at 2.5kg. Though I understand breast feed is best for kids, is there any harm in continuing with lactogen coz milk output is almost zero?

Brief Answer:
no harm

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.
As the breast milk is not adequate you have no other choice than giving top feed.
You may choose between formula like lactogen stage 1 or undiluted cows milk.
There is weight loss for first 5 to 7 days of life there after baby starts gaining weight.
So there will be gain in weight here onwards.
Few precautions you have to take are of are-
1.Avoid bottle for feeding.
2.Wati spoon feed after proper sterilization of wati and spoon in boiled water for 10 to 15 mins daily.
3.One leveled scoop of milk powder should be diluted with 30 ml of boiled and cooled water.
Hope I helped you.

Thank you doctor.
Just a few quick questions. Will there be any significant health concern in future if baby continues to be on lactogen feed? She consumes around 70 to 80ml lactogen milk every 3-4 hrs. To ensure foremilk provides adequate nutrition and suffice breast milk requirements for baby, can you please recommend if I should switch to some other milk formula or should I continue with lactogen 1?
I appreciate your inputs and thanks again for your special attention to my concern.

Brief Answer:
continue with the same

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up.
I can understand your concern.
But the fact is that breast milk is best milk.
Now a days may companies come up with formula which are very near to brest milk in every aspect.
So if you give top feed in correct manner there are no significant health concern.
Some formula are with probiotics which are considered advantagious.
Whether to shift to it or not can be discussed with your treating doctor.
Hope i helped you.
