default
Posted on Wed, 26 Oct 2016
Question: I fell off my horse and got a concussion. My whole left side is sore. I saw a doctor and nothing is broken. My question is can I take hydro codon 5 325 for pain if I have a concussion? I usually take 3 a day for chronic pain.

Brief Answer:
Ouch! That STINGS!

Detailed Answer:
Wow.....I've never fallen off from one but thank goodness you are not seriously banged up even worse.....As a neurologist, recommending narcotic medication to a patient only comes after a careful examination of the patient. Any doctor in the U.S. making recommendations to patients to take controlled substances and especially narcotics can be prosecuted by the DEA for potential issues of prescription fraud...even if we are not the ones to do the prescription if we have not physically and examined the patients.

So, I cannot endorse such a plan by virtue of not being able to examine you and such. I think your concern probably revolves around the concussion and whether or not something like hydrocodone could potentially put you to sleep to the point where any internal bleeding or damage may not be detected by you until it were too late.

Those kinds of concerns are not really entertained anymore so taking or not taking narcotics or other types of medications for pain or relaxation should be done on an individual by individual basis and always in the context of a physical examination. If your doctor who you saw did a thorough examination and determined that you were fit and UNBROKEN and that hydrocodone was appropriate for the type of pain you were suffering with then, I see no problem in following your doctor's orders. If on the other hand the doctor felt that hydrocodone should not be taken based upon some physical or other finding then, again I think there is a reason for that decision and it should be respected.

I know you take 3 a day as it is for chronic pain. I wish there were some type of alternative for that regimen since you're not really treating a problem but rather a symptom. Again, if you are already taking this regimen and your doctor is worried for the concussion then, he should look at the newer data that states that "falling asleep" anymore after a concussion or being pain free is not necessarily looked at as a significant risk when treating pain following concussions.
