Hello thanks for asking

Yes PCR is a very sensitive test can detect infection in even 10 days. So you can remain relaxed. Go for Antigen test or Duo at 4 weeks which can detect p24 even conclusively. Duo test (antibody) if comes negative at 12 weeks then no further testing is advised. What kind of exposure was there?

Thanks

The exposure was unprotected receptive anal.

Brief Answer:
Remain relaxed, no need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

The receptive anal intercourse falls in high risk category but that doesn't mean that every individual in receptive anal intercourse will get infection. Based upon a lot of studies the risk is about 1.2-1.4%. This risk also depends upon factors like viral load in individual, any injury during intercourse, immune status of individual, personal history of individuals etc.

So keep one thing in mind that even if an individual has unprotected sexual intercourse with high risk infected individual even then the chances that he would get HIV infection are very low. But to remain on safer side, safe practices are advised.

PCR test is very sensitive and if that came negative at one week then you can relax yourself. As I told you earlier just get Duo test done at 4 weeks and then for confirmation at 12 weeks. The test coming negative at about 12 weeks is considered as 100% conclusive.

As PCR came negative so I don't think there are chances that the test will come negative in future.

Please follow protection methods in future.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Yes that was a mistake

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

I am sorry for this. The PCR is negative at one week so the chances that it will become positive in future are very rare.

Remain relaxed, and don't over think about this. You are safe.

Thanks

I have one more question. I have been inflicted with a dry cough with the occasional itchy and full feeling throat since about three days post possible exposure. Its almost been a month now and I am worried although it seems everyone I work with has had a similar issue buy hasnt lasted as long as it has for me. Ive had no skin rashes or any of the other symptoms of acute infection. I know that if it was an acute infection that the RNA PCR would have picked it up. I think. Anyway your thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Brief Answer:
This is not acute or early infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

First of all, this can't be Acute HIV infection even clinically. You got the dry cough and itchy throat with in 3 days of exposure. Incubation period can't be so short. The cough is dry and throat is itchy, this could be occurring due to anxiety. You might have developed acute sore throat but that infection got contained by body by own. But due to anxiety you have probably developed throat clearing or cough which is resulting in irritation in throat which is further increasing the risk of cough. There is no fever, no lower respiratory infection, no rash, and also no LYMPH GLAND ENLARGEMENT so this can't be acute HIV infection. During early infection PCR and P24 tests come positive but you have tested negative.

So remain relaxed, warm saline gargles 3-4 times a day and sugar free chewing gums will help in clearing this cough.

Thanks.
