Is Claritin-D An Effective Medication For Sinus Infection?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: Should Claritin-D be prescribed for a Sinus Infection? and should SulfamethoxazoleTMP DS be taken twice a day? My sister has been taking both of these meds since last Saturday and stopped both of them 3 days ago because she couldn't sleep at night. She is now dizzy & nauseaous. Thank you (I can't find an amount of the pill Sulfamethoazole on the bottle-but it is huge and scored in half)

Brief Answer:
Claritin-D suppresses symptoms; SMZ TMP DS with food

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Yes Claritin-D (with the active ingredients loratadine and pseudo ephedrine) help in suppressing cold and flu symptoms, and can be used in an individual with a sinus infection safely.

Sulfamethazole TMP DS (SMZ TMP DS) is usually prescribed based on the condition and the required dosage of antibiotics. In my opinion, you should take this medication twice a day with plenty of water.

A stomach upset can occur with intake of this medication which is why it should be taken with food or milk and so I would advise your sister to continue taking this medication with plenty of water between the doses, and take the medication with food or milk.

But if at all she cannot tolerate it, then you may have to revisit her prescribing doctor for a change in prescription to substitute this antibiotic with another one which would be better tolerated by your sister.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help you.

Best wishes.
