Is Chlamydia Infection Transmitted Through Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Aug 2015
Question: I have been diagnosed with chlamydia. I perfomed oral sex on another man (I'm gay) after I was diagnosed but before I had symptoms. I have told him as I know it is possible for him to contract chlamydia from receiving oral sex. However, for my own peace of mind, what are the realistic chances (percentage wise) that I have infected him. If I have I will fee so ashamed.

Brief Answer:
Chances of transmission of Chlamydia to the oral recipient is meager.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.

You had not mentioned the site of Chlamydia infection in you. Whether in throat or rectum?
Anyhow chance of getting Chlamydia infection by receiving oral sex is a very remote possibility. So you need not have any guilt about that.

I wasn't told by my doctor. How would I know? The pain and burning I had was in my penis.

Brief Answer:
Pain and burning sensation of penis indicated urethritis.? Chlamydial

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
You could have asked your doctor.
What are the tests done for you? If the blood test revealed the presence of Chlamydia, then the infection could have present anywhere in your body. If the swab had been taken from throat or rectum then you can ask for where from chlamydia isolated?
You mentioned that you have burning sensation over penis(?urethra) then it could be from urethra. Are you a bisexual or penetrative Gay? Then Chlamydial urethritis could be possible. Sometimes pain and burning of penis would not have any relation to Chlamydia and could be something else.

All of symptoms were in my penis - none in my throat. The doctor didn't do a throat swab. I've been on medication for 6 days now. Would a throat swab still be able to detect chlamydia there?

You said the chance of infection for the recipient using oral sex is meager. Would this till be the case if chlamydia was spread throughout my body? I performed oral sex on another male though he did not ejaculate. I just want to know what the odds are that I infected him - percentage wise. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Chlamydia transmission through oral sex is unusual.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

Chlamydia usually confined to the site inoculation. Systemic manifestations are very very rare. One can get throat infection through oral sex from a genital chlamydia of the penetrative partner. Similarly rectal and vaginal infection is also possible from the penetrative partner. One can acquire genital chlamdia from an infected partner through anal and vaginal sex whereas it is rare from a source of pharyngitis (oral recipient sex).
If throat swab or rectal swab inoculated into cell lining or in egg yolk it can be isolated.
If you had Chlamydia infection it could either be rectal infection or a oral infection. You had not mentioned whether you have penetrative sex or not. Urethritis could be rare unless you had penetrative anal or vaginal sex.
When you perform oral sex on other male the possibility of he getting Chlamydial infection is remote. The problem in your penis could be something other than Chlamydia if you did not have any penetrative sex.

I had penetrative anal sex. I was the inserting partner and the condom came off. I believe that this is how I contracted it

Is the the most likely cause and therefore most likely that is wasn't in my throat - I didn't have any symptoms in my throat. Thanks for your help

If this is the case, are you saying that it is extremely unlikely that I have chlamydia to the person I performed oral sex on? How unlikely in percentage terms?

Brief Answer:
Genital chlamydia can't be transmitted, when you perform oral to partner

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
If you had chlamydia urethritis, you can not transmit the same to the partner when you performed oral sex on him. Chlamydia present in the urethra can not be present in your mouth or throat as the blood dissemination is uncommon.
There is no such percentage is available.
