Is Chericof Advisable For A Cough In An Infant?

default
Posted on Sat, 8 Apr 2017
Question: My 10 month old daughter had cold and cough last week and shown her to paediatrician. Doctor suggested 0.8ml of Sinarest AF for 5 days 3 times i,e 2.4 ml per day. Her cold is little ok now and doctor suggested Chericof syrup if cough still persist. Dosage advised in 2ml twice a day for 2 days. We finished giving her Sinarest AF for 5 days on Wednesday(15-Mar-2017) and not yet started her with Chericof.

My questions are:
1. I was reading that Chericof is not good for babies and it should be avoided. Is this true and if yes, then what is the safe cough medicine we can give her?
2. I also read that Sinreast AF dosage should be between 0.2 to 0.4 ml for babies between 7 to 12 months. I am not sure why the doctor advised 0.8 ml 3 times a day. I am little worried that we have already given her this dose for 5 days. Should I be really be concerned about this as well? Her weight is 9.5 kg.

Please answer the above question and anything for us to concern about the Sinarest dosage already given.

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on medications

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic. I understand your concern.

Cough and cold are viral 95% of the times in children. For cold you can use anti-allergics like cetirizine and for nose block, saline nasal decongestants will do.

Use of combination should be discouraged at any age in pediatrics.

Please do not worry about the dose already given. It will not cause any harm or serious side effects.

Avoid cough syrups at this age. As the cough and cold are usually viral in origin, give only symptomatic treatment.

For cold you can use Cetrizine at 0.25mg/kg/dose every 12 hourly for 3 days.
For nasal block, plain saline nasal drops will do, every 4-6th hourly to relive nasal congestion.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.
