Is Budesonide Advisable For Chronic Diarrhea?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Mar 2017
Question: I'm taking Budesonide for chronic diarrhea. I have been taking it for about 3 months. I am recently experiencing side effects of an eye infection and sinus problems which started recently. I also get sharp pains and cramps in my legs at night. Is this a potassium deficiency? Also should I be worried about bone density with this drug?

Brief Answer:
Side effect of steroid therapy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query!
Sharp pain and cramps in legs is because of the electrolyte imbalance.Along with stool a person loses a number of electrolytes mainly Potassium and sodium.A imbalance of these electrolyte causes causes cramps in muscles.
As per your question,
Yes i could be potassium deficiency.Get a serum electrolyte test done.Try to keep your body rehydrated,Drink plenty of orange juice and coconut water daily.

Yes long term use of steroids decreases the density of the bones.Steroid causes hypocalcemia and osteoporosis.I would suggest you to go for a test called bone density scan every 6 months.
Thanks!
