Is Azithromycin Intake Safe During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Wed, 9 Jul 2014
Question: Hi,

My wife is 8+ months pregnant. She has caught bad cold and tonsil infection, which is spreading to her ears and jaws. Our ENT doctor has prescribed her azithromycil (AZEE-500) and Candid Ear drops. She has taken the medicines but her condition hasn't improved.

I have the following concerns -
1. Is anti-biotics(Azithromycin in particular) safe for the fetus ?
2. Would could be the adverse implications of her cold infection to our fetus? Could the baby too contrive cold ?

Regards,

Brief Answer:
AZITHROMYCIN IS SAFE DURING PREGNANCY.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) Common cold & throat infection (bacterial or viral) often spread to middle ear cavity, leads to earache. Seasonal changes is MOSTLY associated with that.

YES, AZITHROMYCIN is QUITE SAFE during pregnancy. Alternate safe antibiotic like Cephalexin, Combined Amoxicillin & Cloxacillin or Clavulunate etc along with Anti-histamine drug like Levocetirizine can be given to treat throat infection and improve her condition. Kindly, consult with your doctor for prescription.

2) Baby is WELL PROTECTED inside womb and there will be NO harmful effects from mother's common cold or throat infection at this stage.

In addition, she must maintain oral hygiene to avoid repeated infection. She can use HEXIDINE mouth wash regularly and brush her teeth 3- 4 times daily or after taking foods each time.

Some basic home remedies can improve her condition and prevent recurrence:

a) Drink plenty of water or fruit juice to stay hydrated and keep throat moist.

b) Inhale steam or use saline nasal spray to ease nasal congestion and drippy nose (if present).

c) Stay away from household dust, pollens, powders, droplets, smoke, allergen substances etc.

d) Take one teaspoon honey & tulsi juice in the morning or hot drink like milk at bed time is quite helpful.

e) Take hot shower bath, sleep with an extra pillow under head and vitamin-C supplements are very much essential.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish her good health and successful motherhood.

Regards,
Dr Soumen
