What Does A Lump In The Collarbone Indicate?
Question: I found a lump on the right side of my neck above my collarbone about 2 weeks ago. My doctor had an ultrasound. the results I received today was I had swollen lymphnodes and they were concerned and are scheduling a cat scan next. I'm extremely anxious because everything I have read seems to point to cancer because of it being on right side above collar bone. Right before the ultrasound was taken another lump appeared beside the other one. Both of them are moveable and you can almost get your fingers around and underneath them. Any thoughts

Dear Ms,
There is definitely no cause to be worried about. Right side Supraclavicular (above the collar bone) lymph nodes are rarely malignant.
Left side nodes could be due to metastasis from internal abdominal organs.
As the history is of short duration (2 weeks), the nodes are freely XXXXXXX and possible to get around, I would consider the possibility of non specific reactive lymphadenistis more likely.
Had you been my patient, I would have done the following
1. Ultrasound of Neck
2. Chest X Ray
3. FNAC( Fine needle aspiration of the lymph node)
Before proceeding with CAT scan, FNAC is definitely called for, it will give the possibility/cause for enlargement of node.
I would suggest you to discuss it with your Physician. Also do get back to me with details of all the reports.

I have read that the right side supraclavicular lymphnodes are the drainage of the midsection of chest, esophagus, and lungs. Is this true and I always read that on the right side is more than likely cancer from one of the areas. Is this incorrect information? Thank you for your time and your responses they are greatly appreciated. I'm a positive person the problem for me is the unknown. I can handle anything that comes my way if I know what I'm dealing with. I hope you can understand my concern.

Dear Ms,
Right supraclavicular node or Level V node of neck. Majority of drainage of Oesophagus, mediatinum, chest and lungs goes through Thoracic duct and is drained in Left Branchiocephalic vein. It usually causes enlargement of Left Supraclavicular node also known as Virchow node.
Getting FNAC will definitely reveal the nature and cause of enlargement. I usually go for CT scan when FNAC report is inconclusive or there is any suspicious lesion in chest as demonstrated on Chest X ray.
So would suggest you to get a FNAC in consultation with your Physician.
Request you to keep me updated about the development. It will more likely turn out to be reactive Lymphadenitis.
