Does Alphadopa 250 Cause Irregular Menstruation?

Question: I am having alphadopa 250 after my delivery. Delivery happened on jymun 2015. I am still continuing the tablets. My periods are irregular now after 4 normal cycles after delivery. Does the medicine have an implication on the period ?

Alphadopa can sometimes cause irregular/absence of menstruation.

Biological explanation to this: it causes reduced dopamine levels. This may reduce dopamine's inhibitory effect on prolactin leading to signs and symptoms of hyperprolactinemia. One of this is absence/irregularity of menses.

Alphadopa is basically given to control high blood pressure during pregnancy.
The blood pressure usually becomes normal within 6 weeks after delivery.

Stopping of drug would depend on the reason why you have been prescribed the drug post delivery.

If high blood pressure is the reason and you are facing menstrual problems, a change in drug is indicated.
