Question: Iwas prescribed betacap tr40 i.e propranol timed release 40 mg once a day for last five days for stress and raised BP i.e.130/90. Now I am ok. Can I stop the medicine or do I need to taper off. If taper off, how should I do it?

Brief Answer:
If pressure below 120/80 decrease the dose to 20 mg, < 100/70 stop0

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I am Dr Mody and I would be addressing your concern.

We are looking at two aspects anxiety and blood pressure.
Now there can be two scenerio
1) there was a stress event going and because of that the blood pressure was higher
2) you had already higher pressure and anxiety was an added drug.

Betacarp itself is not a anti anxiety drug, it just decreases the peripheral effect s, like increase in heart beat, tremors which you may have because of anxiety, do don't worry there is no addiction potential and it's a very safe drug, don't be in a hurry to stop it, to prevent rebound.

Atleast continue for 3 weeks, keep measuring the blood pressure, if it's get low (situation 1 was the reason), you may stop it and visit your doctor, if the pressure has normalised (110/70), you may decrease the dose at 20 mg. If normal continue at same dose.

By three weeks, if the stress event is eliminated, and pressure still a bit higher another better drug for just hypertension may be added.

If facilities available, 24 hour ambulatory BP monitoring off drugs can be done to make sure whether you really have hypertension.

I am sorry if a bit confusing, but as I had to put everything in words in one answer, it came best the way, you may ask me if any clarification needed .

I need some clarification
-bp now is 110/70 and stress event is eliminated.
- I have yet taken medicine for 5 days so my fear is that longer I take greater may be rebound. So can I stop it now i.e after 5 days without fear of rebound?
- I have taken 40 mg timed release so if I take 20mg should that also be once a day and timed release? if yes which one is available in mkt?

Brief Answer:
Beta carp tr20 for 3 days, check pressure if normal stop, safest way

Detailed Answer:
I suggest, Tab beta cap tr(20) available in market once a day for 3-4 days, check your pressure if less than 120/80 stop the meds.
Why this way? As I said there is high probability on that day your pressure was higher just because of the anxiety and as that component has come down, you may need NO pressure medication, so if suddenly it's stopped the increase in pressure we would not know whether it's because of drug withdrawal or your your baseline pressure are higher, triggering Un necessary investigation and medication. So individually in your case I believe in gradual withdrawal.
Hoping I could help,
Do rate the conversation for other people's ref.
