Posted on Mon, 30 Jun 2014
Question: My new Doctor put me on Wellbutrin 150 mg this week, because the Paxel did not seem to work for me any more-depression even with 300 mg-and wants to wean me off of the Paxel completely- I feel better today-good in fact , but perhaps a bit wired??? I am in my 60's and wondered if I should see a geriatric physician instead or continue as prescribed by present doctor? XXXX

Brief Answer:
You should wait.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr Abhishek Kapoor, would help you in this query.

Wellbutrin contains bupropion and it is a good antidepressant. Its half life is 14 to 21 hours and a drug needs five half life to get desired blood level. That means, wellbutrin needs five days to get desired blood level. After that, it would show its effect. Antidepressants usually takes two weeks to show response and you have been taking this drug for last one week. In that case, there is no need to shift or change to another antidepressant. With time, drug would show its effect, but you have to wait. You can consult a psychiatrist or geriatric physician, but i would favor psychiatrist. Psychiatrist has good knowledge about depressive or mental disorder than physician. Rest, you can choose your doctor according to your convenience.

In case, you need further help, you can ask.
