How To Resume Prednisolone After Discontinuing It For A Short Time?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Dec 2016
Question: My husband has been fighting prostate cancer for 20-some yeas and has kept it pretty much under control with chemo and such. Recently his oncologist told him to stop taking predisone which he has taken for five years. BUT...he did not tell him to "wean" himself off and he quit immediately...which made him go into a very difficult time...Our GP seemed surprised that he did that as he said he did not know he was taking predizone . Anyway, they have now suggested that we are on Hospice and taking no medicine whatsoever. I have started giving him a prednisone pill daily as he was previously doing and he seems to be doing better. Am I helping or hurting...seeing he is on hospice anyway??? Any other suggestions??

My husband is very alert and his mind is very sharp. He knows everyone and has even answered questions that others are not sure about. He drinks water and 7-up and eats very little. He lays with his eyes closed and we think he is asleep but will join the conversation every once in a while and always has the right answers. He has lost considerable weight but is able to move around in the bed and set in the chair. He also has a catheter so does not get up to the bathroom or commode. I think he could but they don't want him to. Last week he walked to the bathroom..with help but now he is pretty weak.

I have no reports but he had a ct-scan previously that showed no difference than the last one. He was to have a bone scan but was unable to have it done at the time. He was outside working in the yard before they took him off the prednisone and now is bedfast!! Unbelievable!!

Brief Answer:
You can give him Prednisolone for a short period and wane it gradually

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .
Your husband has been detected to have advanced cancer of the prostate and is under Hospice care .

He was on steroid since a long time (5 Years) and has stopped it all of a sudden which under normal circumstances should have been tapered of gradually .

Since you have started him Predinisolone again you may continue it for a month and gradually taper of the dose over a period of next month .

Hope I have answered your query .Please fel free to write if you have more questions .I shall be happy to help you .

Thanks and Regards.

Is there any hope that hid health might return to the way before they stopped the prednisone? He was doing quite well even though his PSA continued to raise. I have read that PSA is not a good indication of cancer cells as once thought. I would be happy to have him like he was about six weeks ago. We were able to visit friends and even go out to eat a few times a week. He says he is in no pain though Hospice has given me 12 hour pain pills...oxycontine...which makes him sleep the 12 hours and also a oxycodone every 3-4 hours. These seem to control what pain he has without making him sleep all the time. Any suggestions?? I just want my husband back the way he was....I know...I'm being nieve... but it seems like they are hurting more than helping and have just given up on him. I haven't~~

Why was he doing so well before the prednisone episode? Nothing changed except the withdrawal symptoms from abruptly stopping the medicine. I realize his age compromises him but it seems like he might return to his "before" condition. I will continue to "expect a miracle" and maybe you should too!!

What about the clinic in Mexico that cures uncurable cancers ? A lady was in stage 4 and went there and is still alive and well after 12 years?? What about oxygen therapy? Natural healing? Why can't all the money spent on research come up with cures? Why does Big Pharm want to keep people suffering just so they can make money??What about Starz trek? or whatever it is? I will keep believing he will get better....he asked for waffles and orange juice for breakfast and ate a few bites which he hasn't been doing. Anyway..thank you for nothing.
