How To Improve Body Weight Of A Baby?

default
Posted on Fri, 21 Nov 2014
Question: Hello Dr.

Our Babies are born on 1st July 2014 and current weight of baby 1 is around 6 kg and others is aroung 5.5 kg.

Current age is 4 months and 5 days and having NAN PRO1 since last month.

The issue is since last 2 months weight gain is not so keen as it was in 1st two months.
First two and half months babies were having PRENAN and that XXXXXXX in 2nd month itself they were having aroung 60-75 ml of feed each time and somtimes 90 ml by 1st baby.

But since last 1 and 1/2 month both are not takimg 90 ml .
Mostly worried about 2nd baby he is taking only 60 ml every time not more than that and when we try to feed it forcefully it starts denying and feels like ommiting.

In short the feed quntity is not improved since last 1 and 1/2 month and hence may be weight gain is not properly happening as compared to 1st two and 1/2 months.

Please suggest so that babies can have good amount of feed each time.

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
There is no cause for concern

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Greetings of the day
Dear XXXX

No two individual have the same growth and development. It even applies to twins. Every baby has their own unique energy requirements and growth pattern.
Going by the weight I would not be much convened about weight of babies even the 2nd one. Ideally babies double their birth weight by 5 months of age . Kindly let me know their birth weights.

I would suggest you the following

1. Feed the babies on demand. Do not force feed , as they are averse to it .

2. Feed when the babies wake up . The early signs that baby is hungry are

a. Lip sucking
b. Staring at breast or feeding bottle
c. Putting fingers in mouth
d. Crying is last sign of hunger

Do not wait until baby cries

3. Burp the babies well

4. After 1 month weaning diet can be introduced

If the following criteria are fulfilled there is nothing to worry about quantity of feeds

1. Babies are cheerful and playful
2. Urine output is adequate
3. Sleep for at least 1 to 2 hours after every feed

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take care

Weight not of concern

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX

Both the babies are doing absolutely fine if you correlate to present weight . They are also showing good catch up growth. They should be 4.5 kg and 3.9 kg by 5 months . So weight is okay
