How To Determine The Paternity Of The Fetus?

default
Posted on Sat, 8 Oct 2016
Question: Please help. If an obgyn could answet that would be great. My fiance is pregant but i found out a few days ago that she cheated on me. lll give the dates of everything i know and see what you think. Her LMP was 2/27/16 and she cheated on 3/2/16. The 5th day of her period. On 5/5/16 she had an ultrasound which put the GA at 9weeks 4days and the CRL at 26.96mm. Now her period its always regular and at times is early and some times is late.
I heard that sperm is most fertile wothin 24 hrs and mostly if not all dead at 72hrs. I also heard that its near impossible to get pregnant within the first 10 days of the start of your period. What do you think my child or hit the road its not my baby. This has me veru upset and confused.

Brief Answer:
Conception was right around 3/12-3/13

Detailed Answer:
Here is a summary of the facts:

1. LMP of 2/27/2016 - due date would be 12/3 with conception = 3/12
2. 9 4/7 weeks on 5/5/2016 - due date would be 12/4 with conception = 3/13

So, what you have is an extremely well dated pregnancy with a known window of conception of 3/12 +/- 72 hours (yes, sperm can live in the cervix for up to 72 hours). This would imply that conception confidently occurred somewhere between 3/9-3/15.

Also, it is very unlikely to conceive on day 5 of the cycle and the above information strongly suggests that this is not when conception occurred. I will also assume that YOU had intercourse with her during the window above. You would also have to be 100% confident that she did not continue to cheat on you beyond 3/2.

I hope that this helps.

Im not sure what you mean on the 9 4/7 weeks part. But you hit it right on with the due date of 12/3. And yes we did have intercourse multiple times during the window of 3/9-3/15. And i know for a fact she didnt cheat after 3/2. It was a one time drunken thing that happened. Now my next question is does it matter that her period is sometimes irregular. sometimes its early sometimes its late. or does it just base off the 2/27/16 since thats the period start date. Also what is hostile cervical mucus.

Detailed Answer:
9 4/7 weeks = 9 weeks and 4 days

Once you have an ultrasound that is accurate, the cycle is really irrelevant. She had an ultrasound at a point in the pregnancy where it is accurate in terms of looking back to see when ovulation occurred AND this agreed with her supposed period anyway.

I have never heard of 'hostile cervical mucous'.

i heard that hostile cervical mucous is a mucous that is harmful to sperm and occures durimg amd after the period and harms sperm and keeps them f from reaching the ovaries. Also at that point in the pregnancy are the ultrasounds accurate. So safe to say that the baby is biologically mine

Brief Answer:
Hostile cervical mucous is not a thing

Detailed Answer:
Cervical mucous changes consistency mid-cycle during ovulation and plays a role in aiding the movement of sperm. At other points in the cycle, it is more of a 'barrier'. It does not really matter, though, because you can't get pregnant when intercourse does not happen around the time of ovulation.

Based on what you are describing in your question and based on the ultrasound information, it would VERY strongly suggest that you are the father. But, I do not have the ultrasound in front of me and I have not talked to your fiancé. The only 100% certain method of making SURE that you are the father is to have a paternity test performed after the delivery. Don't you think that she might just owe that to you?

Ok i see what you are talking about now woth the mucous. As far as seeing the ultrasound is there other measurments on there that would help you. Amd also what other questions would you have for her.

Brief Answer:
That is the most accurate ultrasound she will have in this pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
The earliest ultrasound is the most accurate. Sure, it would have been even more accurate at 7-8 weeks, but this is almost as good. The measurement that you mentioned is the only one related to dating the pregnancy.

These are questions that you would have for her:

1. I would confirm the ultrasound by actually looking at the reports and make sure it agrees with the conversation above
2. I would ask if she was willing to have a paternity test performed after the birth just to make sure that the child is his

I have just confirmed everything with the ultraspund as i have it infront of me now. As far as a paternity test she has also agreeded to this if its what i would like to do. I guess what im looking for is a little piece of mind until she is born and we can get the paternity test done. I just wanted to hear it from a medical professional that it was a very good chance that shes my daughter. Im looking to ease my mind a little bit so im not pulling my hair out and get a little bit of sleep at night. Thats all im looking for. The other thing is though if she ISNTmy daughter how do i tell my family after theu have been by our side through all this and then do i raise her as my own or leave. Thats the other problem i have, i know you cant give me that amswer but thats another issue

Brief Answer:
You are almost certainly the father...

Detailed Answer:
If I was in Las Vegas and I was betting on who was the father, I would put all of my money on you and I would be a rich man. I completely understand your predicament and I am guessing that the fling-guy is certainly not going to want to jump in and father this child. He is almost like a non-anonymous sperm donor (if he was the father). Many people raise kids that might not be theirs because we believe that paternity issues exist without people evening being aware. The problem is that the truth always comes out at some point. But maybe it is worth not even going there. The dating of the pregnancy places you as the father.

I am sure that you do not having anything to worry about. Maybe you should consider NOT doing the paternity test. The odds are incredibly in favor of you being the father and then you never have to go there with your family. You will raise this kid as your own regardless.

Dr. XXXXXXX as this is my last responce due to the suscription i have to this site. I laughed at the responce about you going to vegas. I completly agress with ypu on many aspects of our conversation. I strongly agree and both me and my fiance both feel that she is mine biologically. I can not thank you enough for your fast amd accurate responces that you gave me. After hearing you say about NOT getting the paternity test i am now in the air about it and will make my decision in time. I feel that with the odds in my favor as much as they are i could put that money to better use for my daughter. And lastly i would just like to thank you for all that you do not for just giving me these amswers but for all that you do for everyone at your practice or hospital that you work at. Take care and thank you for everything.
