How To Determine The Biological Father Of A Child?

Posted on Thu, 20 Nov 2014
Question: Hello,

I really need some help and advice. I can't deal with things very well.

Basically, my boyfriend and I found out a girl he was seeing before me is pregnant and she is due November 13th, she doesnt know who the father is.

My boyfriend last slept with her February 2nd 2014 and used protection, she also slept with another guy on the 26th of February and was drunk. Based on her scan due dates, this means she had an LMP on the 6th of February and her conception occurred on or around the 20th of February. There is a slight problem with this, because she took Norethisterone 5mg on the 4th of February and ended up delaying her period and not coming on the 6th because she wanted to go out partying. She came on the 12th of February and had a period till at least the 17th. We know this for a fact because my boyfriend remembers not sleeping with her on the 15th of February because she was complaining of a period. She has even admitted she had a period. Her period before the one in February occured on January 9th 2014.

We have worked out that based on her period in January and probable conception dates, she should have been due October 16th, and based on the last time she had sex with my boyfriend she should have been due yesterday 26th of October. She is 38 weeks this Thursday (30th of October), who is likely to be the father, because the scan dates show neither to really be within dates. Please help, I really dont want this girl to have my boyfriend's child it hurts.

Brief Answer:
Your boyfriend is not the father.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Since she had periods after having sex with your boyfriend, he cannot be the father of the child. Delayed conception aftre 20th Feb is a possibilty but not an early conception on 6th Feb.
If the due date of November 13th is true and has been calculated based on an ultrasound scan at less than 12 weeks gestation then your boy friend cannot be the father of her child.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Hi,

Thanks for replying. So it is possible that she took this Norethisterone and shifted her whole cycle and ovulation occured when she slept with the other guy on the 26th?

She is saying its either my boyfriend or this other guy and no possibility of any one else. Either way am I right in saying that the scans date her LMP as the 6th of February, but we know she delayed this and actually had her period on the 12th, so that either way the period occurred after my boyfriend so it isn't his? It wasnt implantation as it lasted the length of a normal period. Plus, if it was implantation bleeding, she would have been 40 weeks now not 37 weeks. Am I right in assuming that? Also, is it this other guys? They are doing paternity testing but I can't deal with all the stress.

Brief Answer:
Yes you are right.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
She delayed her periods as well as the ovulation after taking norethisterone. She had a proper bleeding which cannot be an implantation bleeding.
The baby is other guy's. It is not your boyfriend's.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Thanks so much for this. One last question, why do the scans date her LMP as the 6th of February when we know it was the 12th? Also her due date is November 13th, but if it was based on when she slept with the other guy it should be November 19th, is this normal? Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
This is normal.

Detailed Answer:
A variation in expected date of delivery by 6-7 days is normal. This is the margin of error in calculating these dates.
You need not worry.
