How To Deal With Negative Thoughts In A Person?

Posted on Mon, 30 May 2016
Question: Hi Doctor, I have a friend who is kind of changed over the years. His family, friends and people around feel the same. She just finished her graduation in surgery and medicine-MBBS but she always flunked in her yearly exams and that kind of pushed her a lot. She always has negative thoughts even if a good thing is happening in front of her own eyes, she would not believe it and will predict something negative. Example: she is about to get married with a guy with whom she was in love for 10 years and now suddenly keeps on saying she will never be happy, she cannot be happy and they will get divorced. She is completely hopeless for everything in her life.

If there are something which are bothering here and we try to solve them, she would be fine but the next day she will bring more issues and even you solve those, next day new things are always ready. She is never satisfied and never happy. She cries on very small things as well, having said this, I understand some people can be sensitive but I am referring towards a complete insane sensitivity. You have to be careful before talking to her. She in her education also took some anti depressant without prescription- just to see what will happen!

Her age is 24 and practically she has everything which one could ask but all you hear is look at the world and how miserable she is!

Another attribute with her is that she will fight with you for things which happened years ago and she will always keep bringing them to you so that sadness or a fight is created. She never let go of any negative things and on the other hand she has a nature of never acknowledging the things she has! She will not even consider them at all and doesn't even remember them. Its a case where she attracts negativity and keeps a sad face for most of the times. She would not sleep and will always plan about the future and then suddenly you realize she is imagining how miserable she would be in her upcoming life. Also, she is afraid of people and has zero confidence. She cant even order a pizza on call. She would try to everything which will make her look normal in the society. She would never say no to anyone even if its harming her to do things for people. She says that she feels-whenever i am walking outside, people are gazing at me and talking foul about me, about be being a looser because I could not do well in exams, life etc.

Looking forward to your expertise!

Brief Answer:
There is possibility of personality disorder

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I hace read your query and understand your concerns.

From the available clinical description it appears to me that she is having dysthymic personality disorder in which person fails to see the both side of their life. In other words it is kind of depressive personality which dominates the persons life and person fails to see the positive side of their life.

In addition there is also possibility of social phobia although available details are not enough to say it conclusively.

Having said this for both the conditions cognitive behavior therapy can be used for treatment with good results. Antidepressant can also be used and show some response but they are not the mainstay of treatment.

I will advise you to see a cognitive behavior therapist or at least a psychologist in your city. Psychologist will take more details and will devise a plan to provide cognitive behavior therapy to change thought process of patient to look the positive side of life. I must assure you that the condition is largely treatable.

I hope this helps you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.
