How To Change The Dressing Post Hip Replacement Surgery?

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Jul 2015
Question: I have a hip replacement surgery incision (from May 27) that seems to be getting red, warm and hurts a bit more than before. I was wondering how best to wash/clean the "closed but not yet scared" incision. My surgeon removed the "wet" dressing when I saw him XXXXXXX 4, there was a little gooey residue left on the incision, I used an salve to try to clean it off, and may have made things worse. So, how do I clean the wound of salve and dressing residue, then, how do I continue to dress the area?

Hello

Thank You for contacting HCM. My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. Following steps could be taken to change the dressing:

- wash hands thoroughly before starting
- clean the area with pyodine solution(first time only)
- apply polyfax plus ointment over the area
- put sterilized gauze piece & apply bandage.
- Keep wound clean and safe from dirt
- wash hands again.

Repeat these measures on daily basis for smooth recovery. If you observe pus or fever with red hot overlying skin then you need to visit hosital

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!

I am at home without transportation to a store for a few hours. Can I take a shower with/or without soap in the meantime?

Brief Answer:
Usually advised to keep wound dry

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for the followup query.

We usually advise patients to keep wound dry. If you want to take shower without soap then go for it but try to keep the wound area less wet and dry it immediately afterwards.

Thank You
