How Long Should Doxycycline Be Taken For Bronchiectasis?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Jul 2014
Question: I am taking doxycycline for bronchiectasis and I am expected to continue on it indefinitely. I have been on it for about 6 weeks and have noticed an inexplicable weight gain. Unsure how to tackle this as I have already become resistant to 3 other antibiotics.

Brief Answer:
may cause weight gain

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Medications can cause weight gain through different mechanisms. It can occur as a result of affect certain pathways in the brain, affecting energy output, feelings of fullness with meals and altering metabolism of fat and sugar.

Though it is not a common problem with doxycycline, there are some persons who do have weight gain with this medication.

In terms of preventing or treating this weight gain, since the antibiotic cannot be altered , you would have to consciously alter your diet and activity level to combat any increase in weight.

This means that you would need to increase your activity within your limits.

In terms of dietary changes: you can either consider a reduction in fat/calories or using a reduced carbohydrate diet.
The aim is not substantial weight loss but for you to possibly loss what you would have put on and also prevent any further gain.

By consciously paying attention to activity and diet, you should be able to further stem any additional weight changes.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any additional questions

Thank you. I have been following low fat and reduced carb diet for the last month but it has not made any difference. I walk regularly within the confines of my condition to get as much exercise as possible.

Brief Answer:
important to reduce fat or carbs not both

Detailed Answer:
Hi

It is good that you are already trying. You may not to reduce both fat and carbohydrates at the same time. They are two separate types of diets and it is important to remember the body needs energy from somewhere to function.

It either uses fats or carbohydrates so if you reduce both then it reduces the energy reserve. You can do either a low fat/low calorie diet or a low carbohydrate diet.

If you are able to do one or the other fully then you would likely notice a change in weight.

Please feel free to ask any other questions
