How Long Is Duphaston Tablet Advisable During Pregnancy?
Question: hi, till what time Duphaston tablet is continued in pregnancy. My wife is 21 weeks pregnant now and has been taking Duphaston since last 4 months as advised by doctor (gynaec). She asked to continue it till 32 weeks.
But due to location change, we went to a different doctor (gynaec) and she advised no need to take duphaston tablet any more. Please advise as we are getting 2 different answers from different doctors.

Generally if there has been no abortion in past and no event of bleeding or pain in this pregnancy then Duphaston is stopped at 16 weeks.
But in case there has been any such history then it should be taken till 32 weeks

I have been following up with you regarding my wife's pregnancy since last 4 months and you have been answering all my questions.

My wife is now 24 weeks pregnant, In our case this is our first baby and by god's grace there is no case of abortion, bleeding or pain till now.
Below is some brief history which is leading to our confusion.
Gynaec1 - Our first gynaec asked to continue Duphaston till 32 weeks. Till 20 weeks she prescribed Duphaston twice a day but after 20 weeks she asked to continue it once a day till 32 weeks.
Gynaec2 - Since we moved to another location, At 22 weeks we consulted another gynaec and she said no need to take Dusphaston as the placenta is fully developed now and placenta produces natural progesterone and helps to support the baby.
When we told her that first gynaec asked to continue Duphaston once a day till 32 weeks, she was surprised as to why other gynaec is asking to take Duphaston.
She also mentioned that Duphaston is effective if taken twice a day and is never prescribed once a day.
She also said its your wish if you want to continue Duphaston till 32 weeks and has left it on us leading to our worry.
All these different answers are leading to lots of worry for us and please help guide us as what to do with this Duphaston tablet. In once of your previous answers to our query you also mentioned to continue it till 32 weeks.
Given the history above, I basically have 3 questions regarding Dusphaston.
1. Should we keep continuing Dusphaston ?
2. If yes, how many tablets a day ? And How long ?
3. If No, will stopping it now have any side effects ? Do we stop it suddenly or gradually.

In my opinion you need not to take Duphaston at all and if at all it is prescribed it should be taken at least twice a day to have effect.
You can stop it instantly without any problem or side effects, no need to taper it
So keeping everything aside, just stop the medicine and I hope she has a healthy pregnancy ahead.

It is just like the natural progesterone hormone secreted in pregnancy but in a normal pregnancy since it is already present in adequate amounts there is no need of top up from outside.

There is no side effect per se so as it is no harm if taken.
