How Long Does Recovery From Crohn's Disease Take?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 May 2016
Question: I've been taking prednisolone now since 31 Dec 2015, the original plan was to take 50mg daily for a week n then 25mg for a week than to take 12.5mg for an unspecified period of time, due to complications I was unable to stay with this plan, the first 2weeks went as planned but I was forced at approx the 2week Mark to up my dose from 25mg to 50mg again for a period of approx 5days in which case I dropped down to 25mg again for 7 days n than dropped to 12.5mg for several days only to face another 'flare up' of my crohns disease(which is why I was put on this medication in the beginning) so I again increased dose to 25mg for another week or so before attempting to reduce off this medication again, so reduced to 12.5mg for a few days only to again experience problems forcing me to increase dose another time! For the whole previous 2months this is how I've been taking prednisolone, my dose has been all over the place. Since beginning prednisolone approx 2months ago my maximum daily dose was 50mg, my lowest 12.5 however I was not on a stable dosage during this period?
It's hard to reduce after such an unstable period of treatment.(PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE OVER LAST 2WEEKS BEEN MORE 'STABLE'. APPROX 14DAYS AGO I STAYED ON 25MG FOR 7DAYS AND THAN REDUCED TO 12.5MG FOR 7DAYS AND 2DAYS AGO I CEASED TAKING PREDNISOLONE) MY QUESTION- ITS BEEN 2MONTHS OF PREDNISOLONE TREATMENT, FOR A FLARE UP OF MY CROHNS DISEASE(WHICH IS UNDER CONTROL NOW, HAS BEEN FOR AWHILE), AND DURING THIS PERIOD MY DOSAGE FREQUENTLY CHANGED MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO KNOW HOW TO REDUCE OFF ALL THE WAY! AS MENTIONED THOUGH OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS IVE MANAGED TO STABILISE MY DOSE AND REDUCE AS I STATED, BUT HAVE I MADE THINGS WORSE BY STOPPING 2DAYS AGO AND SHOULD I GO BACK ON PREDNISOLONE AND REDUCE SLOWER OR IS IT BEST TO STAY OFF IT NOW???

Brief Answer:
Need to restart Prednisolone.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting your query.

See Cronhs disease takes a long duration to go to remission. You have taken just almost 2/ months of Steroids which is not sufficient.

I recommend you restart 12.5mg and take it for a month at least , after 1 month depending on the control of the disease we shall decide whether to stop or to continue.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarification feel free to ask.

Regards.
