default
Posted on Wed, 12 Nov 2014
Question: Hi,
My doctor doesn't believe in using Belviq or other weight loss medications. I am 54 years old, 5'2" tall and weight 199 lbs. Do you know if there is a physician on line that will provide a prescription. My medical history includes gerd that I take protonix to treat. I would very much like to lose weight and would like to try Belviq.
Thank you. XXXX

Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern.

Based on your BMI , which I calculated via weight in kg divided by Height in meters squared, which came out to be around 35.9 which is quite high.

Belviq ( Lorcaserine ) is indicated in a BMI of > 30 Kg/meter squared if there is also a weight related co morbid condition like hypertension, dyslipidemia, Diabetes. so you do fit the criteria if you have a comorbid condition which I described in addition to the BMI which is high.

A prescription can only be given after a thorough history, physical and documentation of the lab findings and diagnoses.

A safe starting dose is 10 mg twice a day. Stop the medication if less than 5 % weight loss is achieved by 12 weeks. You may chose another physician if you aren't happy with your current one who will guide you accordingly.
