How Effective Are Kegel Exercises Post A Hysterectomy?

default
Posted on Mon, 25 Jul 2016
Question: I have seen ads for devices to aid in kegel exercises. These can be bought without a prescription and appear to be similar to what a PT would use to treat you. What can you tell me about the advisability of these electrical stimulator type devices?

Brief Answer:
try them

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Welcome to HCM,

Kegel's exercises with or without the stimulators are equally effective.

The stimulators will just help you do them if you are having difficulty without them.

The stimulators are advised in women who have had pelvic surgery for correction of the pelvic floor.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

I had a hysterectomy many years ago. Does that qualify as pelvic surgery? How do I know if I am doing the kegels effectively?

Brief Answer:
reason for hysterectomy?

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

Do you feel that when you are doing the kegel's, if you were to pass urine the flow would stop? Initially the effectiveness of kegel's was described that way.

Was your hysterectomy done for prolapse? was it accompanied by anterior and/or posterior perineal repair?

Kegel's have to be done minimum for 3 months before its impact on pelvic floor can be judged.

If you feel you are not doping them right, it's best you meet a physiotherapist who could examine how you are doing them and guide you.

Hope this helps .
Regards.
