How Does Kidneys Swells Due To High BP?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Jun 2014
Question: My uncle was undergone the treatment for last 2 months. Following problem he reported in first attempt.
High blood preesure. Doctor of Appolo hospital at XXXXXXX (chattisgarh, India) investigated that due to blood pressure left kidney got swelled. They stopped oily food and started only boiled vegetables in lunch and dinner.
After 1 month now doctor tells that there is no improvement and he has to take an injection of Rs. 1200 each twice a week till next 3 months to improve the haemoglobin and there is chance to damage the kidney and dialysis may be required to be carried out shortly.
All report and prescriptions are attached for your reference. My question is whether is it possible that kidney may be damaged due to blood pressure and if one kidney is having problem then why dialysis comes in picture. And for haemoglobin whether such costly injection is necessary to take? Pl. suggest whether the treatment was OK and now what is to be done based on reports. He is a poor man and cannot afford the expenditure. Reply the exact situation.
I want to know how kidney can swell by blood pressure and how hemoglobin can come down due to blood pressure and kidney problem? Why dialysis i required while there is no problem in second kidney and left kidney also only swelled no other big problem.

Brief answer....given below
Detailed answer...
I have read your query well and would answer you one by one
1.....
The kidneys act as filters to rid the body of wastes. Over time, high blood pressure can narrow and thicken the blood vessels of the kidneys. The kidneys filter less fluid, and waste builds up in the blood. The kidneys may fail altogether. When this happens, medical treatment (dialysis) or a kidney transplant may be needed.
2... Both the kidneys of your uncle are damaged as is proved by the ultrasound and continuous rise of creatine.
Creatine was 3.9 in April and it has gone beyond 5 now.
There are few cysts in the left kidney which you are referring as swellings.
3... Hemoglobin  is formed by the hormone erythropoietin in the body and kidney damage results in stopping of production of erythropoietin and hence it has to given from outside by giving injections of epofit.

I know it is big setback to you and his family but the fact is that his condition is worsening gradually and the only treatment left is dialysis and kidney transplant.
I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
