How Does Endmetriosis And Subseptate Uterus Affect Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Jul 2014
Question: Hi- my wife just found out she is 8 weeks pregnant. She has endmetriosis and a subseptate uterus so we are surprised. She has had constant pain for over two weeks and we are wondering about the risk of an etopic pregnancy/ risks/ chances of trying to go full term.
Looking for an honest appraisal in terms of past history of these cases and likely outcomes. Her strong inclination is to terminate but wanting to get a complete picture of what this all means.
Thanks, loving husband XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Has she had any adverse pregnancy outcomes earlier ?
Also, endometriosis will only get better with pregnancy, it is not worrisome.
The concerns with a subseptate uterus depends on the severity of the septum.
In general, septate uterus carries a risk of pregnancy loss in the first and second trimesters, preterm labour, breech and other malpresentations etc.
Subseptate uterus, too carries these risks, albeit to a lesser degree, the risks are mitigated as the size and length of the septum decrease.
There is no scientific basis to advocate pregnancy termination in these patients.
IT is best to continue the pregnancy while being aware of the risks.
With endometriosis and a subseptate uterus, she is lucky to have conceived, and if you desire a child at any point, best to continue the pregnancy.
After all, risks exist, and to a certain extent, are manageable .
Tightening of the cervix with a stitch, rest, avoiding triggers, progesterone to relax the uterus - are some of the modalities.
All the best
