How Can We Make Our Kid To Mingle/speak With Other Kids?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 May 2014
Question: My kid(4 years completed) who is studying in LKG behaves abnormal, when he meets same group age kids. Though he has been going to school for last 2 years, even now he wont speak with other kids in school. He does not like to have eye contact with other kids, he closes his face with hands whenever some one approach him. He sometimes gibberish at home, talks about meaningless things. We consulted doctor(from Pediatric Development Neurology dept), he suggested to check in other institute for behavior therapy. He is comfortable with elderly especially parents, grand parents, close relatives.
My question
1. Do you suggest anything for parents to change my kid behavior
2. How they analyze and give treatment for behavior therapy
3. How can we make him to mingle/speak with other kids

Dear Mr XXXXXXX

Being a parent myself , I understand your concern and apprehensions.
First and foremost let me assure you, its nothing serious and things can be taken care off. It will require lot of patience and understanding on part of parents and close contacts.

I would like to know few of the things

1. Does he react in the same way with kids of your relatives and neighbors?
2. Does he speak normally and appropriate for his age?
3. was there any delay in developmental milestones like language or motor functions?
4. Is he able to concentrate on one given task and complete the task?

Here are few of my suggestions which I would recommend you

1. Every child is unique and have their own developmental trait and behaviour which is influenced by environmental factors and family atmosphere. The advise for parents would be to go slow and be patient. The very thing that the child is comfortable with elders is very comforting. Many children tend to be introvert and tend to avoid children of their age group. This fact should be understood by the parents to be normal thing in some of the kids. It is after all the world of kids, they have to adjust and mingle with kids of their age group. Parents can only facilitate it and cannot have complete control over.

2.Child of 4 years is still immature trying to experiment and analyse the surrounding. Some children find it difficult being in company of kids of their age group. It would be helpful if you could expose your child to children of his age group especially children of your close relatives or neighbours. If this interaction is possible during play hours and leisure it will be more beneficial for the child to have a relaxing interaction with kids of his age. Children usually find inhibited while in school. He is just in LKG, so there is no point in giving importance to it. Remove the fear of going to school. Let it be a enjoyable experience for him, instead of being a monotonous act of just going to school.

3. Go slow , speak to him , take him out for outdoor picnics. Observe if there is any change in behaviour. In a day take some time especially whoever is more close to the kid to spend 5- 10 minutes( do not be over pushy) to speak with the kid and suggest hi to mingle with the kids. Make him understand that it will be more enjoyable opening up and spending time with same age group children

Behavioural assessment is done by following
1. Detailed history including antenatal , growth and develpment . Age at which developmental milestones are achieved.
2. The way the child responds and answers the therapist
3. Assessment of easy distractability by external stimulus
4. The therapist usually analyses the way the child is behaving along with input from parents
