Question: I have had eye pain with a headache for 9 days. I noticed the top of my head feels sunburned about 4-5 days ago. No sinus drainage but pain inside of my sinuses ( All the time),throat and left ear( occasionally) I have never had a sinus infection, but do get sinus headaches/ migraines often. I have been taking sinus and cold-D and an allergy pill daily. Seems to help some but still have a headache all the time

Hello XXXXXXX

I live in Wisconsin too and the grass pollen is quite high right now.

Do you know that you have allergies and what you are allergic to?

Also, did your headache start in relation to starting some of these medications? Because the cold-D preparation probably has things in it that you might not need and may give a headache.

But if the headache seems related to sinus fullness or stuffiness, try a nasal steroid spray such as Flonase. It can take a few days of daily use to start to see the benefits of it. It can help stabilize the sinus tissues so that you don't have drainage down your throat or into your ear from your throat.

However I am not sure what is going on when you say the top of your head feels sunburned. If that is continuing, I would watch for a Shingles eruption and if it occurs, go immediately to an urgent care to get on an oral antiviral medication.

And given that your headache is an ongoing thing, I do recommend going in to be seen for it unless the Flonase helps significantly.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.

I am pretty sure I have allergies and usually take An allergy pill most of the summer, but have never been tested. Usually I just get a cough and when I take an allergy pill it goes away. I woke up with a headache last Saturday am and noticed my eye was droopy and swollen when I looked in the mirror. I was camping all weekend and didn't start the cold and sinus until Sunday at noon, before that I was taking excedrin or aleive but nothing was working. Cold and sinus-D helps some but this headache never goes away completely.
Can I get the Flonase over the counter?
Thank you for your help

Thoughts on this

Detailed Answer:
You can get the Flonase over the counter (non prescription).

While this may still be related to the sinus/allergy problem, given that the headache never goes away completely, it would be a good idea to go in to be seen. I don't want to miss a cause unrelated to the allergies. Your doctor (or a doctor) can have a look in your nose and throat and see if there are problems related to your sinuses.

If you go in to an urgent care clinic, I advise requesting to see a doctor and not a PA or NP. While Pas and NPs may be fine for dealing with some things already diagnosed, they don't have the fund of knowledge and training to sort though making a diagnosis where there are multiple possible causes.

How do they test for shingles
And am I contagious if I do have shingles

Detailed Answer:
Unfortunately at this time there is no early test for Shingles. I wish there were. Basically we wait for the blisters to erupt and then we call it.

I would not worry about it being contagious unless you are around someone who is immunosuppressed. The chicken pox virus that causes Shingles does not spread easily. Usually keeping it covered or not touching it is enough. It is hard to find any cases of transmission of the virus from Shingles (as opposed to from Chicken Pox, which is more contagious).
