How Can Allergic Reaction To Contact Lens Be Managed?

Question:
Hi Doctor ,
Posting on behalf of my sister.
She is having vision problem since her birth and we diagnosed about it when she was 13.she is wearing Contact lens of -16 power in her right eye since then.
Now that she is getting allergic to the same and when we consulted our doctor , he told it is related to some protein deposits.
She could not wear the lens on daily basis due to this. She is 34 now.

So below are our questions for which I need secondary clarifications.

1.When our doctor diagnosed her at the age of 10 , he told us that , If she doesn't wear lens , the problem can get severe , which will result in eye ball disorientation. So , now , after the usage of lens for about 20+ years , if she stops using it, are there any chances of Eye ball disorientation?. Our doctor is insisting us to use lens for 10 days at least in one month to avoid chances of disorientation , but at the same time , we don't have permanent solution for the protein allergic deposits. He has given some eye drops , she has just started using it .

2.Our doctor also suggested about disposable lens , at the same time , he also gave a hint saying that its not available for power higher than -12, but asked us to try outside , just as a chance. ? Is disposable lens are available for powers > -12 as well.
Also , if she uses disposable lens , will it wont cause protein deposit disturbance ?

Please tell us your opinion.

Thanks ,

XXXX

Brief Answer:
Spectacles usually do not give equivalent vision but may be tried.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Let me try to answer your queries.

1. Eye ball disorientation is a lay man's term and does not actually correlate medically. The eyes have two main refractory parts. The first is the cornea (the transparent portion in front of the eye) and the inner lens. The corneal curvature is often improper and the thin tear film between the contact lens and the corneal surface neutralizes much of this aberration. That is the primary reason of suggesting contact lenses in childhood. Without that the eye power may fluctuate even more as the size of the eyeballs (including the corneas) grows in childhood. That is not the case once adulthood is reached. So, eye glasses can also be tried if the resultant vision is reasonably good. It would not cause 'diorientation of the eye balls'.

2. Most manufacturers make disposable contact lenses upto a maximum power of -12.00 diopters although some manufacturers may make disposable contact lenses upto -14.00 diopters as well. It will still have the problem of protein deposits but since disposable lenses are to be disposed after a certain use, the protein deposits would not get a chance to become enough to interfere with her vision.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
