What Causes Pain In The Lower Back Along With Impaired Bladder Function?

Posted on Mon, 21 Aug 2017
Question: Hi
I had done some lifting 3 weeks ago. The next day I felt intense pain in my legs and had knee pain and overstretching of muscles for the next week. I was give ibuprofen and voltaren gel. The pain grew more and after 2.5 weeks i.e. from past 4-5 days I had back pain which was becoming worse when sitting. For first 2 days it was on right side (lower back)..now it is kind of in the middle of lower back just above the hips. Having read about this..I also feel some sort of impaired/different bladder function as I feel I am not having the same urge to go to urinate as before , also from yesterday i feel some urinary incontinence. I feel that I have done some serious nerve damage or I am having cauda equina syndrome..and maybe require some urgent surgical intervention. My doctor didnt agree and instead had sent me for a blood test ..the blood tests results show c reactive protein of 1.8 mg/L and vitamin b12 of 123 pmol/L which are the only things not in range. I am totally lost as to what course to take..as I cannot go for a MRI/x ray without doctor referral in my current country of residence. Any diagnosis, advice , guidance would be of help.

Brief Answer:
Can be a disc prolapse.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the lower back with impaired bladder function can be due to a disc prolapse with some nerve root compression. Low levels of Vitamin B 12 can also cause such symptoms.
The main treatment of such problem is bed rest along with pain killers and muscle relaxants. Muscle relaxants can help with your symptoms if used in appropriate dosage in combination with a potent analgesic. You can get these prescribed from your orthopedician.
Local analgesic gels and hot fomentation may provide a short term relief. You can use analgesic gels like Volini gel. Exercise is not advisable in the times of acute pain.
Using an LS contour belt of appropriate size might be helpful in providing support to back muscles.
Do start with methylcobalamin supplements and see if it improves in next few days. Avoid bending forwards and have absolute bed rest till then.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
