What Causes Fever, Sore Throat And Spitting Of Blood In A Child?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Jun 2016
Question: Hello, my 6 year old son has had a fever for 2 days now (approx. 101 degrees) which improves when I give him childrens Advil (2 tablets, 2 times per day). He has also been complaining about a sore throat and has been coughing occasionally but mostly at night. 2 Days ago he coughed up a little bit of green phlegm and tonight he coughed up what looks to be a blood clot. Obviously this is very disconcerting and I'm wondering if I should take him to an urgent care clinic or if it is a symptom of a viral infection.

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Fever

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I just read through your question.
What you are describing could be consistent with a bacterial infection in the throat, ie: Strep Throat.
This is not considered an emergency, but does need to be evaluated. If you can get to your pediatrician in the next day then I recommend doing that. if not, and urgent care center would be a good choice.

Thank you for your quick reponse--and making me feel much better! I will take him to the doctor tomorrow but just to confirm--the blood is caused by this bacterial infection and does not require emergency care?

Detailed Answer:
Does not require emergency care.
The blood is due to either the infection or the forceful cough he experienced. in either case, not an emergency.
