What Causes Tingling Sensation On Fingers In Right Hand?

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Mar 2016
Question: Hello Doctor,
You recently answered my questions, but as the status is now 'closed' I am unable to follow up on this matter. I have another question regarding the issue we discussed before, I hope you are able to look the details up in our earlier discussion .

I have noticed that the buzzing sensation in my right leg is much less or even not present after a long walk when I straighten by back more and keep my head /neck more in a vertical position when exercising (walks)
The past few days I haven't noticed much buzzing. Although this can also be caused by the Vitamin B supplements I have been taking the past weeks. Im not sure.

However, today I noticed the fingers of my right hand are tingling when I bend my neck forward the same way. (it disappears after some time of inactivity, as with the leg before)

Can this be poisture related? Do you feel I should have a specialist have a look at this phenomenon. Or should I just wait and see how this develop?

Thanks in advance
doctor

Hello again!

I am sorry the question was closed, I believe the system closes them automatically if inactive for 3 days (not sure though), must have just missed it.

Tingling of the fingers on one side can be a symptom of compression of the nerve roots in the neck. It would be even more likely if the it involves only areas which correspond to a nerve root (say if the last two fingers might be a C8 root, 2nd and 3rd C7 and so on - though not always so clear cut). The cause of compression might be a herniated disc or degenerative changes of the spine.

What makes it a little suspicious though is that regarding the herniated disc it usually is better when bending the head forward (more space for the nerve root between the vertebrae), while degenerative changes at your age are somewhat unlikely (unless there is a factor such as trauma or a long standing condition such as rheumatoid arthritis).

For that reason I would give it some time. If it persists or progresses exams like MRI and nerve conduction studies may be scheduled. The causes are chronic conditions, do not risk wasting precious time, the initial treatment would be posture changes and physical therapy in any case.

Wishing you good health
