Having pain on upper back muscles. What should be done?

Thanks for posting your query.

From the symptoms that you have described it sounds like muscular pain.
Apart from muscular pains, fibromyalgia, Ankylosing spondylitis and irritation of the nerves supplying the area by buldging disc of cervical or thoracic vertebrae also can present with such pains. MRI spine will help in ruling out any nerve or spinal causes.

Till the time you get these evaluated, take mild pain killers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Stronger prescription NSAIDS with muscle relaxants may help if simple analgesics do not help.
Along with it, do hot fomentation and apply a local analgesic gel on the area.
Avoid sleeping on a soft mattress which do not give good support to your back.
Avoid weight lifting.
Some simple back pain exercises.They will help to strengthen the muscles and improve the stability of the spine.
