Question: Hello Doctor .

I am , aged 44 years and . Wife , 38 years . Have a daughter 9 years old , conceived naturally and FTND . When we ere trying to conceive our second child found out that I have oligoasthenospermia . What are the chances of ICSI being successful ? There's no problem with my wife , though she had an ectopic pregnancy in August 2012 , due to which her right tube needed to be removed.

Hello,
Thanks for the query.

Oligospermia refers to decreased sperm count.
Asthenospermia refers to reduced motility.
Oligoasthenospermia is the combination of both.

The treatment of choice for oligoasthenospermia is ICSI.

If everything is normal chances of success with ICSi is 20-25%.
In simple words, Chances of live birth is as high as 25 per 100 women going for ICSI treatment.

Following are suggestions to your wife:
1. Continue taking folic acid tablets.
2. Have diet XXXXXXX in iron and calcium. Drink lot of water.
3. Reduce weight if obese. Ideal BMI is 18-24.
4. Be stress free and have a healthy lifestyle.

Since your wife has no problems, there are high chances of pregnancy.
So don't worry. Continue with your doctor's treatment protocol.

Wish you both a good luck,
regards,
Dr Nilofer
